A welding rod, also known as a welding electrode, is a consumable metal rod used in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) to join two or more metal pieces permanently. The rod conducts electric current to create an electric arc between the electrode and the base metal. The intense heat generated by the arc melts both the electrode and the base metal, forming a strong weld after cooling.
Most welding rods are coated with a layer of flux, which melts during welding to produce shielding gases and slag. This protects the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination, resulting in stronger and cleaner welds.
Welding rods are widely used in industries such as construction, shipbuilding, automotive manufacturing, fabrication, pipelines, railway maintenance, heavy engineering, and repair work.
